Description

This essay explores the development of early Chinese edited Japanese language teaching materials. The three textbooks – Dongyu jianyao, Dongyu rumen and Dongyu zhengui – are anayalsed as representative development as all three are early exemplars of Japanese textbooks for Chinese students and reflect the contemporary purpose behind the study of Japanese. The form as well as the changes in the awareness of Japanese reflect the development of a control over the knowledge of the Japanese language. At the same time, with the corresponding development of an increased need for foreign languages, the Chinese editing of a Japanese language book is seen as an inevitable trend. These three textbooks were referred to as examples and sources in later textbooks and were extremely influential.
