In this essay, the features of the B language used in the Katherine Group Texts are explored through the examination of Old Norse loan words in each of the works included in them. Reference is made not only to Bodley 34 but also to the Royal and Titus manuscripts, utilizing the three manuscript parallel text edition. Our results suggest that ON loan words are familiarized and rooted in the English usage to some extent. They appear widely in the English alliterative phrases and often form hybrid words combined with English base-forms or with English suffixes. A closer examination, however, reveals that the “saints' lives" (SK, SM, SJ) vary in the use of ON words in alliterative phrases. Especially, SJ seems to be somewhat closer to HM in the use of alliteration. Moreover, the scribes exhibit different attitudes toward the treatment of alliterative phrases, sometimes deleting the alliterative words and at other times improving the alliteration. In terms of ON loan words, although KG and AW are different in the frequency of ON words, they still have a considerable degree of similarity. A further investigation is necessary to make it clear whether the AB language is a written standard English of the time or a language peculiar to some local group of speakers,

本論は、13世紀英語宗教散文Ancrene WisseおよびKatherine Group Textのパラレル・テクストを用いて、両作品が書かれたAB言語の特徴を、B言語を中心に検証する試みである。とくに、古ノルド語からの借入語の現れ方を、頭韻とハイブリッド語に焦点をあてて、Katherine Group Textに含まれる各作品および、現存する写本間の異同を精査し、比較検討を加えた。結果として、ON借入語が当時の英語のなかに馴染んで頭韻の形式に取り入れられ、また、OEからの本来語の語幹、接尾辞などとハイブリッド語を形成して英語のなかに溶け込んで用いられていることが明らかとなった。また、従来「聖人伝」として一括りに語られることの多かったSK, SM, SJのうち、SJは他の作品と少なからず異なるスタイルで書かれていることが明らかとなった。また、R写本の第2の写字生がSJの頭韻について削除、回復を行っていること、T写本の写字生はB写本を踏襲しつつもよりよい頭韻を工夫していることも検証された。このように、Katherine Groupの各作品はかなり多様性を含んでいること、また写本の伝搬に伴ってテクストにも多様性が生じていることが明らかとなった。このような特徴は全く異なるスタイルと目的で書かれたAWにはKGほど顕著に表れているわけではないが、一方で類似する頭韻句も少なからず見られることから、AB言語としての共通の基盤が存在していたものと推察される。今後、この時代の他の地域の作品との比較により、AB言語は特定の言語集団のものであったのか、当時の共通文語と言えるものかについての検証が必要となる。
