Recently dating violence has been taking notice as an serious social problem. In Japan many dating violence prevention programs have been carried out in recent years. But studies of mechanism of dating violence are few. Dating violence is but one of violence problems also one of unhealthy love relationships. This study examined the relationship dating violence and attachment. Subjects were 729 university students. Individuals filled out a series of questionnaires inquiring about past dating violence experiences and current attachment. Results indicated that dating violence is related to unhealthy attachment. As for attachment dimensions Avoidance was negatively related to dating violence in men and Anxiety was positively related to dating violence damages in women. As for attachment styles, Preoccupied was positively related to dating violence experiences but gender differences existed on the style of them. These results were discussed for development of dating violence prevention programs.
