Generally, researchers examine historical materials to understand contents of texts and meanings of pictures or seals. However, by observing the papers’ surface and the fibers’ color reaction based on a JIS P8120 test with a microscope, it is possible to more objectively classify the kinds of paper material used for documents and books. To understand paleographical features of historical materials, this study investigated some original materials made in Ryukyu in the late 19th century. The Miyara family (surname Matsumo), whose members were frequently appointed to the highest rank native official“ Kashira” in Yaeyama in the early modern Ryukyu, lived at the “Miyara-dunchi” estate. The study selected two books from the University of the Ryukyus library, including Iro-setsuden, copied by Matsumo Tousou in 1882, and analyzed the quality and raw materials of their papers. Results showed that book pages and scrap papers used to reinforce the book cover of Iro-setsuden were mixed paper made of Kazinoki (Broussonetia papyrifera) or Kozo and Ao-ganpi (Wikstroemia retusa A. Gray). Ao-ganpi is a plant material unique to Yaeyama. The knowledge of this composition is important in researching paper material made in the Sakishima region including Yaeyama.
