Structures of zirconia phase and tungsten species in three kinds of tungsten-zirconium based mixed metal oxides were characterized by XRD and X-ray absorption spectroscopic methods, the phase diagram and acid catalyzed reactions to investigate key components to generate the strong acid sites. Formation of a solid solution for a promoted metal cation and zirconia system, quantitative chemical state analysis of tungsten species in WOx/Y-ZrO2 by EXAFS spectrometry, ill-crystalline zirconium tungsten hydroxide of a model catalyst for conventional tungstated zirconia were discussed.
