  • Behavioral properties in rats and mice with repeated neonatal treatment by NMDA antagonists : as an animal model for schizophrenia

NMDA receptors, a subtype of ionotropic glutamatergic receptors, are related to neuronal plasticity in learning and/or memory, and to that in a developing brain. Rats and mice subjected to repeated neonatal treatment with NMDA antagonists, such as phencyclidine and MK-801, show various patterns of long-term behavioral and cognitive impairment up to adulthood. Since some of these alterations are similar to symptoms in schizophrenic patients, it is recently proposed that these rats and mice might be an animal model for schizophrenia. This paper has reviewed behavioral properties in these animals, and discussed their validity for a model for schizophrenia. Furthermore, remaining issues in the research using these animals are also discussed.
