はじめに : 要求払い預金の受け入れと商工業貸出の提供で定義される「伝統的銀行業」の衰退は、その評価をめぐって繰り返し議論を巻き起こし、金融制度改革論議の中で常に主要な論点となってきた。1970年代までに顕著となった商業銀行の預金シェア低下は、金融政策の効果に影響することが懸念され、DIDMCA(Depository Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act of 1980)成立につながった。1980年代に入ると不良債権の急増により、S&Lや商業銀行の破綻が続出した。……
Researchers have focused on information production when they analyze the role of banks in financial intermediation. However, the uniqueness of banks in providing credit does not lie in information production but in the power of retaliation when a borrower fails to perform the contract. Therefore, a bank borrower relationship can differ according to the competitive environment surrounding them. The decline of "traditional banking” means that changes in the competitive environment have made it more difficult for banks to establish long-term relationships with borrowers through credit provision. This is also true for small banks, even though relationship-based lending may seem a promising option for them to differentiate themselves from other lenders.
