The Liberal ImaginationはLionel Trillingが1942年から1949年にかけて書いた批評を集成した評論集であり、トリリングが文芸批評家としての地位を築く礎になった書である｡そこには、Kinsey Reportを論じたもの("The Kinsey Report")からFreud論("Freud and Literature" と "Art and　Neurosis")、さらには英米の古典的作品(たとえばThe Princess CasamassimaやThe Adventures of Huckleberry Finnなど)を論じた作品論など、当時のトリリングの関心の大きさを窺わせる多様な批評が収められている｡他のニューヨーク知識人がそうであったように、トリリングもまた、自己の知的活動を狭い意味での文芸批評に閉じ込めない関心の広さを持っていた｡しかし、その一方で、トリリングはThe Liberal Imaginationには｢ある種の統一性｣(a certain unity)があると述べている｡彼によれば、その｢統一性｣は、"an abiding interest in the ideas of what we loosely call liberalism, especially the relation of these ideas to literature" に起因するという("Preface")。 ｢リベラリズム思想と文学との係わり合い｣という問題意識が、一見したところ多彩に見えるこの評論集を貫く横棒になっている｡
