In the introductory part of this thesis I discussed the intellectual background of George Eliot's thoughts before she began to write her novels. In her girlhood she was a devout evangelical and afterwards she was one of the first-rate journalists of her day. And I tried to show that her outlook upon life was already mature when she turned to novel-writing. In her early novels, however, she fell back upon the reminiscence of her early days and her emotional attitude accompanied by the lack of impersonal tone shows that her art as a novelist was still far from mature. She had to get over this immaturity of her art before she gained that mastery of her technique which is revealed in her later novels. The main body of my thesis is concerned with her mature criticism of life revealed in her last novel Daniel Deronda and the technique with which she achieved it.
