Description

The purpose of this study is to understand the spatial characteristics of Turkish cities. On the basis of spatial examination of commercial areas in 17 cities from 2006 to 2009, we drew the plans of the market places(Pazars in Turkish)of the following 17 cities: Istanbul, Bursa, Balkesir, Tarakl, Goynuk, Mudurnu, Bolu, Safranbolu, Kasatamonu, Nallhan, Beypazar, Konya, Bergama, Kutahya, Afyonkarahisar, Usak, and Tire. Pazars consist of two types of space: temporary street markets and permanent market buildings for selling daily necessities and groceries. The street market type is made up of mobile, outdoor stalls that are set up along streets and in open areas like parking lots or plazas once or twice a week. The following conclusions can be drawn from our observation and analysis. In Pazars, the streets are heavily congested with street-stalls, shops, and people displaying, selling, and buying goods. Pazars are not only a place for buying and selling, but also provide a forum for local people to communicate. Governmental administrations are taking measures to improve Pazars for more comfortable spaces.
