天体望遠鏡を使用して天体観察を行うことは多くの学習効果や教育効果があり,児童生徒の天文学への興味関心を高めて科学的な見方・考え方を養うことができる.また,一般市民の天文リテラシー向上や生涯学習の効果があり,天文台を市民に対して利用する機会を提供していくことが期待されている.秋田大学教育文化学部天文台は,施設の利用頻度向上と研究施設の市民への開放,地域への天文教育の普及を目的として,一般見学会や夜間天体観察会を実施してきた.これらの活動のうち,夜間天体観察会において参加者のアンケートをまとめた結果,多くの市民が天文台の一般開放や天体観察会の開催を希望していることが分かった.秋田大学教育文化学部天文台を中心にした天文教育の普及の地域拠点としての活動が求められていると考えられる.

The present paper reports on the study that investigated the effectiveness of the community service project that has been offered in the field of astronomical studies by the Faculty of Education and Human Studies at Akita University. One of the mid-term goals of Akita University involves providing nearby citizens with a variety of chances to make use of university facilities. This type of sharing academic knowledge and the provision of experiences in the field has been done by giving them a chance of viewing stars, and developing pedagogic materials relating to astronomy for the novice, to list a few. The astro nomical observatory that is situated at Akita University has been an important source of knowledge for the habitants of that area, as well as a tool for carrying out a scientific investigation. Although it has not fully been functioning as a research institute these days due to a lack of professional staff, its educational value deserves reappraisal, because quite a number of participants have joined the program to date, and the facility is expected to help them deepen their understanding of astronomy, thereby becoming literate in the field. To examine the effectiveness of the program, survey research was conducted to those who have participated in the program to date. Amongst a variety of findings, the most informative was that there were a substantial number of visitors who were interested in the project and who expected to join it to learn about astronomy. The paper concludes with suggestions for the further development of the project in the future.
