説明

“Internationalization” and “Globalization” has been one of the major principles in education of Edogawa University since its foundation. In terms of that, English education has been considered very important. Although a number of efforts and trials have been made in the five years since our Department was established. there are still many problems and tasks that we have to tackle for further improvement and development of English education. It is frequently pointed out and also criticized that (1) the teaching purposes and contents of English classes in Group 1 and those in Group 2 of our Department are so ambiguous that the classes are not attractive nor efficient enough for the students; (2) even though there is a variety of English classes, the management of the classes is not effective mainly because the levels and contents do not meet the students’comprehension abilities. To solve these problems, reorganizing the English curriculum is urgent. To resolve the first question, English classes of Group 1 should indicate a specific educational purpose: a survival English that enables the students to act and spend time by themselves while on the school trip abroad, enjoyable English classes that attract and interest the students, particularly those who dislike English study, English grammar and writing for the students who wish to better organize their linguistic knowledge and to challenge English qualification tests. On the other hand, English classes of Group 2 should be organized on the basis of Group 1, and the contents of the classes should be related to future professional interests: (A) a business-oriented course for tourism, air service, logistics, IT, financial circles or commerce, (B) English qualification-oriented course that benefits and encourages the students to attain specific achievement. To solve the second question, we have to set up and divide the classes into several levels corresponding to the students’ abilities and purposes of study. It is necessary to indicate specific measurements of level and the contents of each class to the students enrolling in these classes.
