Description

The sociology of knowledge, as developed by Karl Mannheim, has become one of the important areas of research in the social sciences. The problem in Mannheim's sociology is the relevance of the values embodied in the social structures in knowledge. Mannheim was interested in the question of the cognitive value of ideology. At the same time he regarded ideologies as important because they contribute to a political orientation. Mannhein remarks that in the discussion of ideology the concept is used in two senses : particular ideology and total ideology. His total concept of ideology is close that of Marx's false consciousness. This paper examines the conceptual relations between Mannheim's theory of ideology and Lukacs's theory of false consciousness.
