I gave an overview of psychological clinical supervision conducted in graduate schools at the stage of training beginning psychological professionals, and proposed "improvement of mentalizing ability (the ability to explore the mind using the mind)" as a common teaching goal that can be widely applied regardless of school or field. I introduced Mentalization-Based Treatment, a therapeutic technique that focuses on fostering mentalizing ability, and stated that it is a safe educational method for students because it has a methodology similar to coaching and has a strong psycho-educational component. Next, I summarized the practical reports of Mentalization-Based Treatment in terms of how the improvement of mentalizing ability can be realized. In addition, I showed that mentalizing is essential for postgraduate education. In addition, I discussed the importance of consensus building among instructors on how to ensure a secure and safe relationship in an educational guidance setting that is evaluated as a challenge when aiming to improve mentalizing ability in graduate education.
