抄録

太平洋島嶼諸国の中でもとりわけ環礁の国々は、脆弱な自然条件のもとにある。本稿では環礁国であるマーシャル諸島共和国の首都マジュロとキリバス共和国の首都タラワでの調査にもとづいて、まず環礁地形の成り立ちと淡水資源の構造を概説し、その脆弱性を明らかにする。次にマジュロと南タラワにおける廃棄物処理の現状、海面埋立の課題、廃棄物削減の取り組みについて報告する。

Among the Pacific Island Nations the small atoll island states in particular have the extremely fragile and vulnerable environment. Based on firsthand observations in two atolls, i.e. Majuro Atoll, the capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and Tarawa Atoll, the capital of the Republic of Kiribati, this paper reviews the geological history of atolls and the formation of groundwater, points out the vulnerability of freshwater resources, and reports upon the present waste management systems and challenges in the waste disposal and reduction in Majuro and South Tarawa.
