Description

Children's picture books "MAMEHON", miniature books, published from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. They are considered important for understanding the history of Japanese publishing, the history of picture books for children, and the history of folktale retellings. However, inexpensive miniature books were often discarded or buried in private collections. In this paper, I examine a mamehon named Sarukani hanashi . In Sarukani hanashi , a bee, a mortar, and an egg cooperate to avenge the death of a crab killed by a monkey. It based on Japanese folktale, The battle of a monkey and a crab . The synopsis of the story is what was mainstream at the time, but the pictures and text reflect elements of both theater and children's culture.
