For more than a decade, acquiring competencies in intercultural understanding to construct a multicultural society has been one of the most important goals of higher education in Japan. However, the practicality in achieving its goal, for example deepening their meaning within various Japanese contexts, has been scarcely implemented. Additionally, some have pointed out that findings between the academic research and practical fields have not demonstrated connections sufficiently. Therefore, in order to respond to various questions brought by the reality stated above, this paper attempts to combine findings from three areas including academic insight from author's research overseas, practical findings based on author's involvement in academic association and findings from his teaching field. The results revealed some commonalities among those three areas regardless of different circumstances. It has also provided some tentative but significant insights, which may contribute to change the status quo on intercultural and multicultural reality within Japan.
