Abstract
“Can infants show an appreciation of art?” During France's democratization of its education system, “access to art and culture” was one of the last areas to develop during this transition in the country's history. The importance of art education for young children in particular, was not thoroughly focused on or addressed during this time in France. "Art and culture" is vested in all people, and it is only recently that enough attention has been paid to the importance of art education for children in their early years. This concept of art as an important element in childhood education is extremely late-coming with regards to art education reform in France. For the first time in 1994, Agnes Desfosses2 created a spectacle for very young children, from six months to four years old, and gained wide success with her efforts to promote theatrical art for children. As a result of her success, Desfosses was invited to Germany, Portugal, Spain and Belgium to perform. She discovered outstanding concentration, sensitivity and imagination among the young children across Europe, and she confirmed that there were significant relationships between art and the infants she focused on. This article also considers "children's experience of art" by looking into the concept of Alain Kerlan's work, “On the Educational Root of the Art.” Kerlan's work further emphasizes the importance for children to experience art, and to actively be involved with artistic activities.
