Description

Trace fossils from the Middle Miocene (about 14 to 12 Ma) Komegawaki Formation in the Echizen Coast area, Fukui Prefecture, central Japan. Ichnofacies revealed that the paleoenvironment of the Shuku Tuff Member in the Komegawaki Formation is the Cruziana ichnofacies from the lower shoreface to the inner shelf zone. The ichnofacies contained seven ichnospecies such as Conichnus conicus, Cylindrichnus concentricus, Paleophycus haberti, Phycosiphon incertum, Rosselia socialis, Teichichnus isp. and Thalassinoides isp. The presence of Phycosiphon incertum revealed that alternating layers of mudstone and fine-grained sandstone of the Shuku Tuff Member were deposited in a sea area with low oxygen.
