This report describes the hijacking of The Sapporo Medical Journal (ISSN 0036-472X) by a predatory publisher.The Sapporo Medical Journal is a bulletin produced by Sapporo Medical University. The Sapporo Medical Scholarly Center is the editorial office for the bulletin. The office discovered the existence of a fake website because of an email from a researcher working abroad in September 2020. The fake website was using actual information from our bulletin and sending promotional emails to researchers to steal the article processing charge (APC). The Sapporo Medical Scholarly Center immediately published a caution regarding the fake website on our center’s website as well as the university’s website, then protested against the fake website via email. The police did not act on the matter. Because the Scopus database included a link to the fake website, our center requested that Scopus delete the link, which they eventually did. To conclude, closing a fake website is difficult, and distributing information about the false nature of a fake website should be prioritized.
