Glycoprotein N-linked oligosaccharides in the endoplasmic reticulum function as tags to regulate glycoprotein folding, sorting, secretion and degradation. Since the N-glycan structure of a glycoprotein should reflect the folding state, N-glycan processing may be affected by the aglycone state.
