They are expected to play an important role as both interconnects and functional components in the fabrication of nanoscale electronic and optoelectronic devices. This article presents an overview of current research activities that center on nanowires whose lateral dimensions fall anywhere in the range of 1–200 nm. It is organized into three parts: The first part discusses various methods that have been developed for generating nanowires with tightly controlled dimensions, orientations, and well-defined properties. The second part highlights a number of strategies that are being developed for the hierarchical assembly of nanowire building blocks. The third part surveys some of the novel physical properties (e.g., optical, electrical, and mechanical) of these nanostructures. Finally, we conclude with some personal perspectives on the future research directions in this field. </jats:p>"}]}],"creator":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1380011143832650754","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"PEIDONG YANG"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"Department of Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720, USA"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1380011143832650752","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"YIYING WU"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"Department of Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720, USA"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1380011143832650753","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"RONG FAN"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"Department of Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720, USA"}]}],"publication":{"publicationIdentifier":[{"@type":"PISSN","@value":"0219581X"},{"@type":"EISSN","@value":"17935350"}],"prism:publicationName":[{"@value":"International Journal of Nanoscience"}],"dc:publisher":[{"@value":"World Scientific Pub Co Pte Lt"}],"prism:publicationDate":"2002-02","prism:volume":"01","prism:number":"01","prism:startingPage":"1","prism:endingPage":"39"},"reviewed":"false","url":[{"@id":"https://www.worldscientific.com/doi/pdf/10.1142/S0219581X02000061"}],"createdAt":"2002-07-27","modifiedAt":"2019-08-07","relatedProduct":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360283694087072768","@type":"Article","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"A Nonaqueous Route to Prepare Novel CuS Macroporous Material"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360565169063989504","@type":"Article","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"One-step Synthesis of Single-crystalline CdSe Nanorods via γ-Ray Irradiation"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360565169064180864","@type":"Article","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"One-step Preparation of ZnSe Nanorod Aggregates"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1390282680163535616","@type":"Article","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@language":"en","@value":"Chains of crystalline-Si nanospheres: growth and properties"},{"@language":"ja","@value":"Chains of crystalline-Si nanospheres: growth and properties"}]}],"dataSourceIdentifier":[{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1142/s0219581x02000061"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1380/ejssnt.2005.131_references_DOI_1h7m8YEriMD3dMTrkmSyIMI9H69"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1246/cl.2005.120_references_DOI_1h7m8YEriMD3dMTrkmSyIMI9H69"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1246/cl.2006.1186_references_DOI_1h7m8YEriMD3dMTrkmSyIMI9H69"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1246/cl.2004.1068_references_DOI_1h7m8YEriMD3dMTrkmSyIMI9H69"}]}
