<jats:title>Synopsis</jats:title><jats:p>This study explored the incidence and perception of psychosocial stress among 1596 patients attending breast screening clinics and 567 controls attending a well women clinic. It was found that some major life events (e.g. death of husband, death of close friend) were significantly related to breast disease and severity. The implications of the results are discussed.</jats:p>
