It uses propensity score matching, a technique that mitigates endogenity, to examine the impact of parental migration and post‐migration guardianship arrangements on the children's educational performance as measured by test scores for Chinese and mathematics. One core finding is that the educational performance of children is adversely affected by parental migration only when both parents migrate or when a non‐parent guardian is the principal carer. Additionally, longer durations of parental absence are associated with poorer educational performance. The migration of two parents only significantly adversely affects the educational performance of boys. There is no significant effect on the educational performance of girls. On the basis of our findings we argue that rather than support left‐behind children within the countryside, the long‐term policy response should be to remove the institutional obstacles that prevent family resettlement in the cities.</jats:p>"}]}],"creator":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1381137045702279041","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Minhui Zhou"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"Ph.D candidate in Economics, Renmin University of China, Beijing."}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1381137045702279040","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Rachel Murphy"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"Associate Professor in the Sociology of China, University of Oxford."}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1381137045702279042","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Ran Tao"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"Professor of Economics, Renmin University of China, Beijing."}]}],"publication":{"publicationIdentifier":[{"@type":"PISSN","@value":"00987921"},{"@type":"EISSN","@value":"17284457"}],"prism:publicationName":[{"@value":"Population and Development Review"}],"dc:publisher":[{"@value":"Wiley"}],"prism:publicationDate":"2014-06","prism:volume":"40","prism:number":"2","prism:startingPage":"273","prism:endingPage":"292"},"reviewed":"false","dc:rights":["http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/termsAndConditions#vor"],"url":[{"@id":"https://api.wiley.com/onlinelibrary/tdm/v1/articles/10.1111%2Fj.1728-4457.2014.00673.x"},{"@id":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/j.1728-4457.2014.00673.x"}],"createdAt":"2014-06-16","modifiedAt":"2024-05-27","relatedProduct":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360567181521809024","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Children of Migrants: The Cumulative Impact of Parental Migration on Children’s Education and Health Outcomes in China"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360580232144802048","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Conditions under Which Rural-to-Urban Migration Enhances Social and Economic Sustainability of Home Communities: A Case Study in Vietnam"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1390571563558285824","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@language":"en","@value":"Long-Term Parental Absence and Educational Expectations among Children: A Quantitative Analysis of Left-Behind Children in China"},{"@language":"ja","@value":"親の長期不在と子どもの大学進学希望――中国における「留守児童」世帯の子どもの分析から――"},{"@language":"ja-Kana","@value":"オヤ ノ チョウキ フザイ ト コドモ ノ ダイガク シンガク キボウ : チュウゴク ニ オケル 「 ルス ジドウ 」 セタイ ノ コドモ ノ ブンセキ カラ"}]}],"dataSourceIdentifier":[{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1111/j.1728-4457.2014.00673.x"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1007/s13524-017-0613-z_references_DOI_KguQ0S2Tups1DE18UvdYoQVxXP7"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.3390/su13158326_references_DOI_KguQ0S2Tups1DE18UvdYoQVxXP7"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.4234/jjoffamilysociology.33.91_references_DOI_KguQ0S2Tups1DE18UvdYoQVxXP7"}]}
