A comparison of the predicted Cocos‐Caribbean direction to slip directions of numerous shallow‐thrust subduction earthquakes from the Middle America trench between Costa Rica and Guatemala shows the slip directions to be deflected 10° clockwise from the plate convergence direction, supporting the hypothesis that frequent dextral strike‐slip earthquakes along the Central American volcanic arc result from partitioning of oblique Cocos‐Caribbean plate convergence. Linear velocity analysis for forearc locations in Nicaragua and Guatemala predicts 14±2 mm yr<jats:sup>−1</jats:sup> of northwestward trench‐parallel slip of the forearc relative to the Caribbean plate, possibly decreasing in magnitude in El Salvador and Guatemala, where extension east of the volcanic arc complicates the tectonic setting.</jats:p>"}]}],"creator":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1381699994784229760","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Charles DeMets"}]}],"publication":{"publicationIdentifier":[{"@type":"PISSN","@value":"00948276"},{"@type":"EISSN","@value":"19448007"}],"prism:publicationName":[{"@value":"Geophysical Research Letters"}],"dc:publisher":[{"@value":"American Geophysical Union (AGU)"}],"prism:publicationDate":"2001-11","prism:volume":"28","prism:number":"21","prism:startingPage":"4043","prism:endingPage":"4046"},"reviewed":"false","dc:rights":["http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/termsAndConditions#vor"],"url":[{"@id":"https://api.wiley.com/onlinelibrary/tdm/v1/articles/10.1029%2F2001GL013518"},{"@id":"https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1029/2001GL013518"}],"createdAt":"2004-02-05","modifiedAt":"2023-11-21","relatedProduct":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1050587981431983232","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@language":"en","@value":"Hydrogeological responses to incoming materials at the erosional subduction margin, offshore Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica"},{"@value":"Hydrogeological responses to incoming materials at the erosional subduction margin, offshore <scp>O</scp>sa <scp>P</scp>eninsula, <scp>C</scp>osta <scp>R</scp>ica"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360004229805541632","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Normal faulting and mass movement during ridge subduction inferred from porosity transition and zeolitization in the <scp>C</scp>osta <scp>R</scp>ica subduction zone"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360285708451655552","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Forearc carbon sink reduces long-term volatile recycling into the mantle"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360285713557152000","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Scientific Drilling"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360869855557998848","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Comprehensive assessment of four volcano-hosted geothermal fields with relation to tectonics and faults in El Salvador"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1390290393637121408","@type":"Article","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@language":"en","@value":"Updating “the laws of convergence rate of plates” by Otsuki (1989)"},{"@language":"ja","@value":"プレート収れん速度の法則（Otsuki, 1989）の更新"},{"@language":"ja-Kana","@value":"プレートシュウレンソクド ノ ホウソク(Otsuki, 1989)ノ コウシン"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/2051996267023640576","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Frictional properties of sediments entering the Costa Rica subduction zone offshore the Osa Peninsula : implications for fault slip in shallow subduction zones"}]}],"dataSourceIdentifier":[{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1029/2001gl013518"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1002/2016gc006577_references_DOI_1rTMieIeGVwGhFPWccMMmTXabTJ"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1038/s41586-019-1131-5_references_DOI_1rTMieIeGVwGhFPWccMMmTXabTJ"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.2204/iodp.sd.15.03.2013_references_DOI_1rTMieIeGVwGhFPWccMMmTXabTJ"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.5575/geosoc.2021.0008_references_DOI_1rTMieIeGVwGhFPWccMMmTXabTJ"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1186/1880-5981-66-72_references_DOI_1rTMieIeGVwGhFPWccMMmTXabTJ"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1002/2015gc005837_references_DOI_1rTMieIeGVwGhFPWccMMmTXabTJ"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1016/j.geothermics.2023.102880_references_DOI_1rTMieIeGVwGhFPWccMMmTXabTJ"}]}
