The traditional concepts of sexual selection assume that females benefit from their mate choices, whereas sexual conflict assumes that the females suffer greater costs by mating with males who have greater mating success and thus reduce their fitness. In order to understand how mate choice evolves, it is necessary to estimate the overall effect of mate choice on female fitness. However, relatively few studies have conducted that investigation. In this study, we investigated the direct and indirect effects of mating with attractive males on the fitness of females in the cigarette beetle Lasioderma serricorne. Mating with attractive males increased the number of female offspring but did not affect female longevity. Additionally, we found evidence that attractive males sire highly attractive sons. Thus, mating with an attractive male provides direct and indirect benefits but no fitness cost to female L. serricorne."}]}],"creator":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1382544419981921920","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Kensuke Okada"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1382544419981921922","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Taro Fuchikawa"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1382544419981921923","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Yusuke Omae"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1382544419981921921","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Masako Katsuki"}]}],"publication":{"publicationIdentifier":[{"@type":"PISSN","@value":"03405443"},{"@type":"EISSN","@value":"14320762"}],"prism:publicationName":[{"@value":"Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology"}],"dc:publisher":[{"@value":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC"}],"prism:publicationDate":"2012-10-09","prism:volume":"67","prism:number":"1","prism:startingPage":"53","prism:endingPage":"59"},"reviewed":"false","dc:rights":["http://www.springer.com/tdm"],"url":[{"@id":"http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s00265-012-1424-2.pdf"},{"@id":"http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00265-012-1424-2/fulltext.html"},{"@id":"http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s00265-012-1424-2"}],"createdAt":"2012-10-08","modifiedAt":"2020-07-14","relatedProduct":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1050283687312803712","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@language":"en","@value":"Male Courtship Behavior and Weapon Trait as Indicators of Indirect Benefit in the Bean Bug, Riptortus pedestris"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360002218155145600","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Attractive males produce high‐quality daughters in the bean bug<i>Riptortus pedestris</i>"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360004231195926528","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Relationships between male attractiveness, female remating, and sperm competition in the cigarette beetle"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360567181149379840","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Fitness costs of polyandry to female cigarette beetle Lasioderma serricorne"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360567184875656064","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Sexual conflict over mating in\n <i>Gnatocerus cornutus</i>\n ?
