We biopsied 81 hypertensive outpatients (blood pressure ≥160/95 mm Hg) with moderate renal insufficiency, who were referred to our service from 1988 to 1998. Patients with known causes of hypertension, systemic disorders, rheumatic disease, or nephrotic syndrome were excluded. In 65% of patients, HN was the sole histological abnormality associated with renal dysfunction. Benign nephrosclerosis (BN), defined as isolated arteriolar hyalinosis and/or intimal fibrosis, was found in 18 HN patients (22%), whereas malignant nephrosclerosis (MN), denoted mainly by myointimal cell proliferation, appeared in 35 HN patients (43%). Previously undiagnosed primary nephritis (PN) was found in 13 patients (16%), whereas focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis, which might be either primary or secondary to hypertension, appeared in 15 patients (19%). These findings suggest that HN, in both its BN and MN forms, can be a definite cause of chronic renal insufficiency and that a substantial fraction of patients with renal insufficiency and clinical diagnosis of HN may actually have PN.
"}]}],"creator":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1382825896199229824","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Edna Regina Silva Pereira Caetano"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"From the Renal Division, Department of Clinical Medicine (E.R.S.P.C., R.Z., J.N.P.), and the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine (L.B.S.), University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1382825896199229825","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Roberto Zatz"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"From the Renal Division, Department of Clinical Medicine (E.R.S.P.C., R.Z., J.N.P.), and the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine (L.B.S.), University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1382825896199229826","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Luís Balthazar Saldanha"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"From the Renal Division, Department of Clinical Medicine (E.R.S.P.C., R.Z., J.N.P.), and the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine (L.B.S.), University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1382825896199229827","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"José Nery Praxedes"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"From the Renal Division, Department of Clinical Medicine (E.R.S.P.C., R.Z., J.N.P.), and the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine (L.B.S.), University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil"}]}],"publication":{"publicationIdentifier":[{"@type":"PISSN","@value":"0194911X"},{"@type":"EISSN","@value":"15244563"}],"prism:publicationName":[{"@value":"Hypertension"}],"dc:publisher":[{"@value":"Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health)"}],"prism:publicationDate":"2001-08","prism:volume":"38","prism:number":"2","prism:startingPage":"171","prism:endingPage":"176"},"reviewed":"false","url":[{"@id":"https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/full/10.1161/01.HYP.38.2.171"}],"createdAt":"2012-06-12","modifiedAt":"2024-05-12","relatedProduct":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360004236339171584","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Early Stage of Chronic Kidney Disease with Renal Injury Caused by Hypertension in a Dog"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360283690463750656","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Tubulointerstitial damage as the major pathological lesion in endemic chronic kidney disease among farmers in North Central Province of Sri Lanka"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1390282681425622912","@type":"Article","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@language":"ja","@value":"1．高齢化社会の日本で増え続ける腎硬化症の病態と治療戦略"},{"@language":"en","@value":"1.
