This paper reviews recent studies of animal–plant interactions in seagrass beds, focusing particularly on studies conducted in Japan and Thailand. Although the positive effect of seagrass habitat structure on animals has been widely acknowledged, the magnitude of this effect varies greatly among studies. A comparative study on epifaunal communities and a manipulative experiment using an infaunal bivalve revealed that behavioral and life‐history traits of component species and their interactions influence the observed variation. Some recent studies have challenged the previously accepted view that direct herbivory on seagrasses is rare, and has a minor effect on the seagrass community. A series of studies of dugong herbivory revealed that the marine mammal has great impacts not only on seagrass productivity but also on the infaunal community. Furthermore, it has been found that seed predators have a negative influence on seed production and the subsequent recruitment of seagrass. Recent studies have also demonstrated significant effects of fine‐scale landscape patterns in seagrass vegetation on productivity, species interactions and community structure in seagrass beds. Future research integrating new concepts and theories in ecology, such as metapopulation and hierarchy theories, with new research tools, such as molecular‐genetic analyses and remote‐sensing techniques, may aid in developing a more comprehensive understanding of population and community dynamics in seagrass beds.</jats:p>"}]}],"creator":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1383670318925187968","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Masahiro Nakaoka"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"Graduate School of Science and Technology Chiba University 1‐33 Yayoi‐cho 263‐8522 Inage, Chiba Japan"}]}],"publication":{"publicationIdentifier":[{"@type":"PISSN","@value":"14383896"},{"@type":"EISSN","@value":"1438390X"}],"prism:publicationName":[{"@value":"Population Ecology"}],"dc:publisher":[{"@value":"Wiley"}],"prism:publicationDate":"2005-08-12","prism:volume":"47","prism:number":"3","prism:startingPage":"167","prism:endingPage":"177"},"reviewed":"false","dc:rights":["http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/termsAndConditions#vor"],"url":[{"@id":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1007/s10144-005-0226-z"},{"@id":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full-xml/10.1007/s10144-005-0226-z"},{"@id":"https://esj-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1007/s10144-005-0226-z"}],"createdAt":"2005-08-11","modifiedAt":"2025-10-21","relatedProduct":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360294643844171648","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Distribution, Temporal Change, and Conservation Status of Tropical Seagrass Beds in Southeast Asia: 2000–2020"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360567181507387520","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Development of novel microsatellite markers in a tropical seagrass, Enhalus acoroides"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360567182307523200","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Seagrass ecosystem services – What's next?"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360567182994221824","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Seasonal fluctuation in food sources of herbivorous gastropods in a subtropical seagrass bed estimated by stable isotope analysis"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360849945729799680","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Seasonal change in spatial variability of eelgrass epifaunal community in relation to gradients of abiotic and biotic factors"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1362257542292651648","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Spatial patterns and predictor variables vary among different types of primary producers and consumers in eelgrass (Zostera marina) beds"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1390001204366568704","@type":"Article","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@language":"ja","@value":"熱帯・亜熱帯域における沿岸域生態系の景観形成種の遺伝的分化"},{"@language":"en","@value":"Genetic differentiation of species for landscape formation in tropical and subtropical coastal ecosystems"},{"@language":"ja-Kana","@value":"ネッタイ ・ アネッタイイキ ニ オケル エンガンイキ セイタイケイ ノ ケイカン ケイセイシュ ノ イデンテキ ブンカ"}]}],"dataSourceIdentifier":[{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1007/s10144-005-0226-z"},{"@type":"OPENAIRE","@value":"doi_dedup___::027f766de3ee8e7067c692766f3443a3"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.3389/fmars.2021.637722_references_DOI_BM76fecBFPtSjIzxF1jMIz8SvaY"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1007/s12686-012-9614-9_references_DOI_BM76fecBFPtSjIzxF1jMIz8SvaY"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1017/s0025315418001108_references_DOI_BM76fecBFPtSjIzxF1jMIz8SvaY"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.4282/sosj.33.7_references_DOI_BM76fecBFPtSjIzxF1jMIz8SvaY"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1111/maec.12522_references_DOI_BM76fecBFPtSjIzxF1jMIz8SvaY"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1371/journal.pone.0201791_references_DOI_BM76fecBFPtSjIzxF1jMIz8SvaY"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1016/j.marpolbul.2017.09.014_references_DOI_BM76fecBFPtSjIzxF1jMIz8SvaY"}]}
