The investigation area extends from the Pacific coast to the southern Altiplano Plateau in the back arc of the South American subduction zone. The main geoelectrical structure resolved is a broad and probably deep‐reaching highly conductive zone in the middle and deeper crust beneath the high plateau. Although the data show deviations from two‐dimensionality, a two‐dimensional approach is justified for large parts of the profiles. Sensitivity studies were carried out in order to constrain the depth extent. Another electrically conductive structure was resolved in the middle crust of the Chilean forearc, thought to be connected with the Precordillera fault system. The Andean Continental Research Program (ANCORP) seismic reflection profile, carried out along the same line at 21°S, revealed highly reflective zones below the Altiplano, in good correlation with the upper boundary of the Altiplano conductor. This highly conductive domain also coincides with low seismic velocities and a zone of an elevated <jats:italic>v</jats:italic><jats:sub><jats:italic>p</jats:italic></jats:sub>/<jats:italic>v</jats:italic><jats:sub><jats:italic>s</jats:italic></jats:sub> ratio and, although not well resolved, with low <jats:italic>Q</jats:italic><jats:sub><jats:italic>p</jats:italic></jats:sub> seismic quality factors. Taking into account the enhanced heat flow and a derived temperature model, the most probable explanation lies in the assumption of granitic partial melts. The good conductor below the volcanic arc which was found in regions farther south at 22°S gradually vanishes toward the north; this is consistent with the results of seismic tomography concerning <jats:italic>Q</jats:italic><jats:sub><jats:italic>p</jats:italic></jats:sub> values and a gap of recent volcanism.</jats:p>"}]}],"creator":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1383670319559598592","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Heinrich Brasse"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"Fachrichtung Geophysik Freie Universität Berlin  Berlin Germany"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1380579818731590530","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Pamela Lezaeta"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"Fachrichtung Geophysik Freie Universität Berlin  Berlin Germany"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1380579818731590531","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Volker Rath"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"Fachrichtung Geophysik Freie Universität Berlin  Berlin Germany"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1380579818731590528","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Katrin Schwalenberg"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"GeoForschungsZentrum  Potsdam Germany"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1380579818731590529","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Wolfgang Soyer"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"Fachrichtung Geophysik Freie Universität Berlin  Berlin Germany"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1380579818731590400","@type":"Researcher","foaf:name":[{"@value":"Volker Haak"}],"jpcoar:affiliationName":[{"@value":"GeoForschungsZentrum  Potsdam Germany"}]}],"publication":{"publicationIdentifier":[{"@type":"PISSN","@value":"01480227"}],"prism:publicationName":[{"@value":"Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth"}],"dc:publisher":[{"@value":"American Geophysical Union (AGU)"}],"prism:publicationDate":"2002-05","prism:volume":"107","prism:number":"B5","prism:startingPage":"2096"},"reviewed":"false","dc:rights":["http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/termsAndConditions#vor"],"url":[{"@id":"https://api.wiley.com/onlinelibrary/tdm/v1/articles/10.1029%2F2001JB000391"},{"@id":"https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1029/2001JB000391"}],"createdAt":"2002-10-27","modifiedAt":"2023-10-17","relatedProduct":[{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360005518352195712","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Saline aqueous fluid circulation in mantle wedge inferred from olivine wetting properties"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360572092548278272","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Electrical Conductivity in Texturally Equilibrated Fluid‐Bearing Forsterite Aggregates at 800°C and 1 GPa: Implications for the High Electrical Conductivity Anomalies in Mantle Wedges"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360857593646949120","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Electrical conductivity of melts: implications for conductivity anomalies in the Earth's mantle"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/1360868136300337664","@type":"Article","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Application of the fast and robust bootstrap method to the uncertainty analysis of the magnetotelluric transfer function"}]},{"@id":"https://cir.nii.ac.jp/crid/2050588892090759936","@type":"Article","resourceType":"学術雑誌論文(journal article)","relationType":["isReferencedBy"],"jpcoar:relatedTitle":[{"@value":"Magnetotelluric transect of Unzen graben, Japan : conductors associated with normal faults"}]}],"dataSourceIdentifier":[{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1029/2001jb000391"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1186/s40623-019-1004-z_references_DOI_8lJ1S6ZjbtutA99Qirj8hAA8ahW"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1038/s41467-019-13513-7_references_DOI_8lJ1S6ZjbtutA99Qirj8hAA8ahW"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1029/2020jb021343_references_DOI_2rsxewyBVcpftI1YcOIhtr3Uudw"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1093/nsr/nwab064_references_DOI_8lJ1S6ZjbtutA99Qirj8hAA8ahW"},{"@type":"CROSSREF","@value":"10.1093/gji/ggaf162_references_DOI_8lJ1S6ZjbtutA99Qirj8hAA8ahW"}]}
