説明

Sulfur globule-depleted cells of Chromatium sp., a phototrophic bacterium blooming at an upper boundary of the H2S layer of Lake Kaiike, were exposed to different light levels to examine their upward movement in glass tubes filled with liquid medium containing H2S. Without a light supply the bacterium did not deposit any sulfur globules and settled to the bottom. With a light supply of 0.2μ mole⋅m-2⋅S-1 in a 12-hr light and dark cycle, those bacterial cells which deposited sulfur globules floated upwards in the medium, while floating cells below the top layer slowly decreased in number. With a light level of 10 μ mole⋅m-2⋅S-1, all the cells were filled with sulfur-globules, and the bacterium grew well, showing a homogeneous distribution in the medium. Upward bacterial movement was remarkable when sulfur-globule-depositing cells were placed in a light-limiting condition.
