Description

Some reports are starting to appear in the literature on the diagnosis and treatment of trismus caused by hyperplasia of tendon and aponeurosis of masticatory muscles. We report the case of a 29-year-old female with a history of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Trismus was indicated when the patient was examined at a nearby dental clinic for dental treatment, and so the patient was referred to our department. Based on clinical and graphic findings, a diagnosis of hyperplasia of tendon and aponeurosis of masticatory muscles was made. After surgical operation, an increased range of jaw motion was seen. However, after the operation the patient refused jaw-opening training due to an exacerbation of obsessive-compulsive disorder, which led to a reduction of the range of jaw motion. Therefore, jaw-opening training was conducted by an oral surgeon in cooperation with the psychiatry department, and a good outcome was obtained. The experience of this case is reported.<br>
