Abstract
A palynological study was carried out using the OK4 long sediment core taken from the Okute Basin, Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture, Central Japan. We recognized 28 local pollen zones—OK4-1 to OK4-28 — in an ascending order, and then compared these pollen zones with the pollen sequences of the Core OK1 previously reported from the same basin and the LR04 marine isotope stack. The chronology was based on widespread tephra (K-Ah, Sakate, AT, K-Tz and Ng-1). The pollen record provides a continuous vegetation history during the past 340 ky. Each pollen zone corresponds to marine isotope stage (MIS) 1-9, as follows:OK4-19=MIS 5.5, latest OK4-16a=MIS 7.1 or 7.3, OK4-13=MIS 7.5, OK4-10=MIS 8.5, OK4-7=MIS 9.3 and OK4-5 to OK4-1=early MIS 9 or latest MIS10.<br>Forests of MIS9.3 and MIS8.5 were predominantly composed of Cryptomeria japonica. MIS7.5 and MIS7.3 or 7.1 were cool-temperate broad-leaf forest stage of Fagus crenata and Quercus subgen. Lepidobalanus, In MIS 5.5, mixed forests of Quercus subgen. Lepidobalanus, Fagus crenata and pinaceous trees expanded under northern warm-temperate climate. In a glacial time, MIS 8, forests were composed of pinaceous conifers with Cryptomeria japonica. In the period of MIS6 and MIS4 to MIS2, pinaceous conifer forests developed under cold and dry condition.
