Fifty-nine block slides in Kinki district were examined in a study of present-day land use and remedial measures . In 70% of the areas which we dealt with, the slides had been modified by human activity before mass wasting, suggesting that many block slides were caused by artificial landform changes. Remediation was commonly implemented to maintain the existing land use ; in almost 70% of the cases, remedial measures consist of piles and anchors. Form I and Form II slides are mainly considered as primary and recurrent, which are intensely controlled by slip surface structures. Most of Form M slides, however, are taken to be secondary, which are less influenced by slip planes. In the 93% of forest and road locations, slide areas had been prinipally modified artificially ; almost half of these slides were found to be primary and recurrent. Forest area slides appear to reflect the general expansion of human land use into these areas. Especially, in hills and mountains, it is necessary to evaluate landslide susceptibility in order to ensure that land use does not trigger past landslides and increase potential of future slope failure.
