Description

A case of SCLE in a 24 year old man is reported. He developed annular rash on the chest and psoriatic lesions on the face and arms. On admission, he had general fatigue, high fever, liver damage, leukocytopenia, high titers of anti-nuclear antibody and anti SS-A an tibody. Urinary examination showed mild proteinuria, and an electroencephalogram detected abnormal waves. Histological findings showed epidermal atrophy and focal liquefaction degeneration. Direct immnofluorescence test revealed deposits of IgG, IgA, IgM and C3 along the basement membrane zone. Treatment with predonisolone 40mg daily relieved all signs and symptoms. The rash resolved with pigmentation but no scarring. In the Japanese literature, 7 cases of SCLE associated with a systemic illness have been reported. We discussed the symptoms and therapies in those cases.
