Description

Lymphangiomas are benign tumors, and those originating in the gallbladder are quite rare, with only 11 cases being reported worldwide to date. Here, we report an asymptomatic lymphangioma originating in the gallbladder in a 63-year-old woman who was referred to us after a medical checkup revealing an intra-abdominal cyst. Abdominal sonography revealed a 60×28mm cystic mass located between the gallbladder and the second portion of the duodenum. The cyst was not enhanced by DIC-CT. We suspected that the mass might originate in the gallbladder and operated on because such cysts have been reported to be associated with adenocarcinoma. The cyst was found to originate in the gallbladder, and there were no anomalies in the intra-abdominal space. The cyst was successfully resected by laparoscopic cholecystectomy without complications. Histopathological examination revealed no malignancy and the cyst to be a lymphangioma involving the gallbladder.<BR>Preoperative diagnosis of gallbladder lymphangioma remains difficult because it mimics cystic diseases or malignant neoplasms of the gallbladder. The diagnosis is often made intraoperatively. Here, we present a case of lymphangioma of the gallbladder which was detected by a medical checkup and was diagnosed and completely resected while it was silent.
