Description

Abstract : Many kinds of file systems and materials have been developed for root canal enlargement in recent years. Recently, various types of nickel titanium (Ni-Ti) file system have been developed. Initially, manual Ni-Ti instruments were developed and applied clinically, but their cutting efficiency was low, so many engine-driven file systems for easy enlargement have been developed. This study evaluated the shaping ability of K3® (SybronEndo), a new rotary engine-driven Ni-Ti instrument.

We compared the shaping ability between the K3® and Quantec Series 2000® SC (Analytic Endodontics Company) in terms of the shaping time and cutting efficiency for root canal enlargement. The Quantec 2000® SC had a positive cutting edge as well as K3®.

The working time of the K3® was faster than that of Quantec Series 2000® SC to prepare the root canal of human mandibular incisors. The transportation of the root canal wall using the K3® was significantly less than that of the Quantec Series 2000® SC at the apical portion of simulated resin canals. Thus, the K3® had many clinical advantages for root canal preparation.
