A variety of phenol derivatives were synthesized and their antioxidative properties for an ester lubricant were investigated using a differential thermal analyzer. It was found that the antioxidative ability of triphenylmethane type phenols is closely related to the nature of the substituents on the phenyl ring. In general electron donating groups enhanced antioxidative ability. A relationship between the antioxidative ability of the phenols and the OH stretching band frequency in IR spectra was also found ; strong hydrogen bonding was considered to reduce antioxidation properties. 4, 4'-Dihydroxydiphenyl sulfide and ether showed much stronger antioxidative ability than the corresponding bisphenol. Furthermore, synergetic effects in the mixed antioxidants of the sulfide and phenols are described.
