Description
Japanese modern newspapers appeared in the early Meiji era played a important part in the development of modern letterpress printing imported to Japan from American Presbyterian Mission Press, Shanghai in 1869-70 (2-3 of the Meiji era). "Tokyo Nichinichi Shinbun" issued on 30 March 1872 (5 of the Meiji era) was a first Japanese daily newspaper printed by letterpress with metal types (not wood types). At this time, "Tokyo Nichinichi Shinbun" used a metal type imported from American Presbyterian Mission Press. Because these metal type caused some problems like absence of enough characters and difficulty of typesetting for the shapes of types, it was derailed in the brief period of ten days. Though it was ended in a brief period, it took a important part in the developement of Japanese typography. In this paper, writer examin their meaning by analyzing printing surfaces of "Tokyo Nichinichi Shinbun" 2-11 considering its aspect of typesetting and the shapes of types.
