Description
Aimed at describing story structures of movies and at utilizing them to retrieve, browse, edit and summarize movies, "Semantic Score Method" which evaluates scenes of a movie as semantic units of its story was proposed. Through analysis of fifteen "Semantic Graphs" of movie titles in five genres, a clue to extract their important scenes was found and four character functions of the graph were introduced as follows; scene ratio of the highest complication, complication ratio of the last scene, the average duration time of scenes, and fractal dimension. The typical Semantic Graph patterns in each genre are settled on as follows ; action type : "Slant type", drama type : "Mountain type", comedy type : "Plateau type", love-story type : "Right sided mountain type", and fantasy type : "Mountain range type". Discriminant analysis of fifteen movies with four character functions showed effectiveness of the Semantic Score Method on describing a story structure of a movie.
