Description
A new genus of hunch-back like Bivalvia, Gigantocallista, is proposed and Pitar sendaica Nomura is designated as the type-species. The genus is monotypic and may have evolved from the Miocene genus Neogenella. Gigantocallista sendaica occurs only in the Pliocene Tatsunokuchi Formation, and may reflect localized zoogeographic or paleoecological conditions within the Pliocene Paleo-Sendai Bay.
