Description

The spatura rub-out method to measure the oil absorption value is specified in JIS K 5101-1978 (Testing Method for Pigments). Since the end point is judged by visual and tactile observation, the oil absorption values obtained by this method apt to have a significant operator variance. So a reliable, reproducible oil absorption test that does not require human judgement as to the end point is needed. An available instrument that can perform these function is an absorptometer. This instrument is specified in JIS K 6221-1975 (Testing Method of Carbon Black for Rubber Industry) to determine the DBP absorption number of carbon blacks for use in the rubber industry, and so its torque spring is adjusted for carbon blacks. The spring is so strong that one cannot determine the oil absorption properties for every variety of pigments using the absorptometer. So authors modified the absorptometer by incorporating a strain gauge, a strain amplifier and a recorder to determine its usefulness for all type of pigments.<BR>By the modified absorptometer the authors could provide objective oil absorption values which are not subject to human errors. Additionally the authors proposed to determine the void volume among the particles of pigment relating the oil absorption property with the mercury penetration method by the mercury pressure porosimeter.
