Description
It is expected that preventing dimerization by fixing a triplet carbene on a solid surface is an effective method to make this reactive species longer-lived. To test this possibility, we synthesized a dyad of a diaryldiazomethane, which is a precursor of carbene, and a tripod-shaped trithiol consisting of the adamantane framework. A self-assembled monolayer was prepared by adsorption of the trithiol moiety of this molecule on a Au(111) surface via three S-Au bonds. The diazomethane on the monolayer was denitrogenated by photolysis, and the resulting carbene was detected by trapping with ferrocene derivatives having a hydroxy or vinyl group.
