Description

[Objective] This study aimed to clarify the findings of studies on body image in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) through a research synthesis.
[Method] The research synthesis method proposed by Cooper was used to conduct a literature review. Publications suitable for review were identified using the keywords "SLE", "systemic lupus erythematosus", and "body image". The publications were classified using simple codes and a table of philological summary data was created.
[Results] Twenty-four publications were identified. "Scale development" and "QOL decline" were included in many publications with the theme of "HRQOL". "Appearance change" and "appearance concern" were included in publications with the theme of "Appearance". "Effects of treatment", "social support" and "primary care" were included in publications with the theme of "Medical Treatment and Support".
[Conclusions] The results of this study on body image in patients with SLE indicate that these patients face many difficulties, have various needs regarding problems with their appearance, and their body image influenced their medical treatment.
