Abstract
This paper attempts to reveal the interaction in the task activities by foreign and Japanese university students using a conversation analytic approach. The sequential context that involves the use of repetitions of other group member's utterance by referencing turn-taking system and sequence organization was examined. Results show that foreign and Japanese students cooperatively proceed the tasks by goal-oriented interaction. There is also a possibility that the goal-oriented interaction might inhibit the occurrence of dialogues between foreign and Japanese students towards multiculturalism.
