Description
The influences of face-side packing and Sidewall softening on the mechanical behaviour of the surrounding rocks and coal seam are investigated using the non-linear finite element analysis method to obtain practical guidelines for the effective measures to maintain gate roadways. The sz-sults of the investigation are summarized as follows.
1) A non-linear finite element analysis is able to provide the optimum design of the packing to corespond with the mechanical properties of roof and floor rocks.
2) It is possible to control the development of failure in the surrounding rocks and enhance the stability of the roadway by selecting the most appropriate conditions of the packing.
3) Sidewall softening by such means as horizontal slot cutting, blasting or boring is effective as analternative method where it is difficult to maintain the roadway by means of packing.
4) The optimum depth of the softened zone is to be at least one to two times asgreat as the width of the roadway.
