Slurry erosion-corrosion tests on some commercially pure iron were conducted in corrosive slurries composed of silica sand and hydrochloric acid- or sodium hydroxide-solutions using a fountain-jet testing unit in which the impact angle of solid particles could be precisely regulated. As a result, it has been found for the corrosive slurries of hydrochloric acid solutions that erosion-corrosion rate under the impact of deep angles was larger than the combined rate caused either by erosion or corrosion, thus the effect of synergistics was positive. On the contrary, the erosion-corrosion rate under the impact of shallow angles was smaller than the combined rate, thus the effect was negative. In order to bring light on the cause, erosion and corrosion rate under the erosion-corrosion conditions was quantitatively investigated. It has been made clear that erosion is accelerated by corrosion and while corrosion is inhibited by erosion, and also that the degree of the acceleration or inhibition varies depending on the impact angle of solid particles.
