Cr-Cu sintered electric-contacts for vacuum insulated switch need to be separated easily when they were welded together by Joule heat. Therefore, the Cr-Cu sintered materials need to be low strength. We have already reported that Te addition was effective in strength reduction and it was affected by Cr-Cu-Te ternary compounds between Cr particles and Cu matrix. In this work, we tried to prepare the ternary compound and evaluated its mechanical properties.<BR>Cr2CuTe4 compound was prepared from 48.2mass%Cu2Te-51.8mass%Cr2Te3 compact by PM method and SPS (Spark Plasma Sintering) method. Fracture toughness (KIC) of this compound measured by IM (Indentation Microfracture) method was 76 MPa·m1/2, which showed the brittleness of this compound compared with Cr. The reduction in destruction energy of Cr-Cu-Te sintered material is considered to be caused by this brittle ternary compound.
