Description

From the beginning of July to the end of September 1999, several cases of MRSA nosocomial infection broke out in our perinatal center. The infection control committee, comprised of 5 outside experts recommended that in addition to the improvement of hospital equipment and nursing procedures, monitoring of colonization from the nasal carriage of neonates should be performed every 5 days. It is now one year and 10 months since the monitoring colonization began. The colonization of MRSA was detected in4neonates (1.7%) in stage I (where for the first year handling was restricted to neonates born after the 36th week of gestation) and 1 neonate (0.4%) in stage II (where for the following 10 months handling was restricted to neonates born after the 34th week of gestation). This suggests that our procedures for MRSA nosocomial infection control and the monitoring of colonization from the nasal carriage every 5th day had been very effective in controlling the outbreak.
