The stability ratio W of monodisperse polystyrene latex particles was measured by the soap titration in the presence of NaCl or NaCl+polyacrylamide (PAAm). The stability ratio Wss for the flocculation of the latex particles by the addition of NaCl was explained by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory. For the flocculation of the latex particles by the addition of PAAm+NaCl, the stability ratio W showed a minimum, which decreased with increasing the molecular weight, and the optimum flocculation polymer concentration (Cop), at which W has minimum, shifted to the lower polymer concentration with increasing the molecular weight. The stability ratio W was successfully separated into the stability ratios Wpp and Wsp, where Wpp, was originated from the interaction between two polymer-covered particles, while Wsp was governed by the interaction between a polymer-covered Particle and a bare particle. It was found that Wpp·ncreased with increasing the molecular weight, while Wsp changed in reverse. The molecular weight dependence of Wpp was interpreted by taking account of the steric stabilization factor, whereas the molecular weight dependence of Wsp, was attributed to the bridging mechanism.
