説明

Sodium dodecylpolyoxyethylene sulfate (EA), a polyoxyethylene-type anionic surfactant, which formed a redox initiator with ceric ion (CeIV) was used for the emulsion polymerization of styrene at 25°C. The following results were obtained. (1) The structure of EA-CeIV complex varied with the feed ratio of EA/CeIV and the complexes formed at a low EA/CeIV had little reactivity. (2) Rate of polymerization (Rp) and degree of polymerization (Pn) satisfied the following kinetic equation;<BR>Kkd increased with polyoxyethylene chain length of EA and was smaller than the corresponding value for the system using a nonionic surfactant which exhibited the same degree of hydration as EA. This phenomenon was explained by considering the electrostatic repulsion of the end groups of EA.
